EAU CLAIRE — A free outdoor family show by Dennis Warner on Monday, Aug. 2, will begin the last week of Summer Session Programs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Music on the Mall concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin, Davies Center). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
Blending acoustic folk-country music and humor, Dennis Warner presents upbeat, up-tempo kids and family concerts popular in well over 100 cities each year — from small village gatherings in Alaska to huge auditoriums in Florida. His credits include hosting "Jammin' with Dennis Warner," a special live radio show broadcast by National Public Radio affiliates, and spots on local and regional programs including NPR's "Great Acoustics, Live!" (New York) and WCCO's "The Ruth Koscielak Show" (Minneapolis).
Recipient of two new artist awards from Billboard magazine, Warner has been honored three times as a finalist in the Emerging Songwriters Showcase at the internationally renowned Kerrville Folk Fest. He appears regularly at The Bluebird Cafe, the Nashville club known for discovering new talent, and he just released his fourth recording, "A Perfect Morning."
Also on campus during the week of Aug. 2 are these free Summer Session Programs:
"Fearless" (1993) will conclude a decade-by-decade survey of classic films with screenings at noon and 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Directed by Peter Weir ("Picnic at Hanging Rock," "Witness," "The Truman Show"), the 121-minute R-rated film will screen via DVD projection.
Jeff Bridges stars as Max Klein, a plane crash survivor transformed by an otherworldly calm in the presence of death. Seen by fellow survivors as a hero, he is viewed with less awe by an airline psychiatrist (John Turturro) who sees his detached, reckless behavior as post-traumatic stress syndrome. In hopes they may help each other, he brings Max together with the only other crash survivor who refuses help — a chronically depressed woman (Oscar nominee Rosie Perez) whose baby was killed. Isabella Rossellini and Tom Hulce costar.
"The story has the simplicity and force of a fable," wrote Boxoffice magazine. "This is a movie that stands not only with the best of Weir's past works and among the best releases of the year, but which may very well be one of the handful of truly great works to emerge from a director of Weir's generation ... 'Fearless' is that scarcest and most singular of commodities — a film made in contemporary America that actually deserves to be called wise."
Wednesday at noon, a Jazz at Noon concert will begin on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin, Davies Center). Refreshments will be sold.
UW-Eau Claire Summer Session Programs are sponsored, in part, by Central Radio Group (WAXX-FM, WAYY-AM, WIAL-FM, WECL-FM, and WEAQ-AM). The eight-week annual series is coordinated by the Activities and Programs Office.
