Campus Photo Calendar
MAILED: July 15, 1999|
With the millenium nearing, the University Bookstore at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has produced a 24-month calendar to "bridge" the centuries.
The calendar, which is the first of its kind for the university and documents dates from July 1999 to June 2001, was designed and photographed by Michael Bass, a 1996 UW-Eau Claire graduate.
The idea for the calendar, which sells for $24.95, came after customers were taken with postcards featuring Bass' photographs that were sold in the Bookstore, said Candy Wilson, retail operations manager.
"People wanted more of the pictures in poster and picture form," Wilson said. "We had to look at what would be most cost effective and the Admissions Office had expressed interest in a calendar."
Bass received his BFA degree with a dual emphasis in graphic design and photography from UW-Eau Claire in the spring of 1996. He came to Eau Claire in 1994 after receiving a degree in technical communications with a photojournalism emphasis from UW-Platteville in 1993. In 1995, Bass was hired as a student graphic designer for the University Centers and Programs office. He worked beyond graduation as a limited term employee and project staff member until February 1999, when he accepted a graphic design position with ZD Studios in Madison. He completed the calendar under special contract.
Bass is most recently known for the redesign of the Blugold ID cards that bear his campus photographs and he is widely recognized for his promotion for the Artists Series and The Forum.
Bass took the calendar photos over a three- to four-year period, said Juelie Sires, senior university relations specialist for University Centers and Programs, who directed the project from its inception last year. She believes it's unusual for universities to offer such an item, and that unusual circumstances made it possible.
"Not all campuses have a BFA degree, a state-owned bookstore with the resources they are willing to commit and a job where student designers are given the freedom, confidence and ability to produce something like this," Sires said. "Some people simply don't have enough faith that something like this will be a hit."
"Michael Bass was the key to this calendar," Wilson said. "We have a lot of faith in it. I think we are going to have to reorder. Our goal was to have the calendars out for orientation. Sales are going well even without advertisement. People just see it and they want it."
The premium-quality two-year calendar printed under license by Reindl Printing, Inc., of Merrill, Wis. is available in the University Bookstore on the lower level of Davies Center. Summer hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Those wishing to order the calendar by phone may call (715) 836-2171. American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and Blugold Account purchases are welcome. A $5 shipping and handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.
