Matt Wahl to Perform|
July 12 at UW-Eau Claire
MAILED: July 1, 1999|
Singer-songwriter Matt Wahl will present a free outdoor concert July 12 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Summer Session Programs show will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin, Davies Center). Refreshments will be sold. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating.
Matt Wahl combines a variety of influences to create an unusual acoustic rock-folk sound. Drawing from such artists as Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin and Jimmy Buffet, he styles original songs that are meaningful lyrically and musically. He grew up in Eau Claire, and began playing guitar at age 12. His singing and songwriting skills truly began to develop while he studied theater at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Also on campus during the week of July 12 are these free Summer Session Programs:
"In the Heat of the Night" (1967) will continue a decade-by-decade survey of classic films with screenings on Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture, Norman Jewison's whodunit will screen via video projection in Davies Theatre.
On a hot night in a Mississippi town, a policeman discovers the body of a local industrialist. A man (Sidney Poitier) is quickly taken into custody and subjected to bigoted, insolent questioning by the police chief (Rod Steiger). After they learn that their "suspect," Virgil Tibbs, is actually a top-ranking Philadelphia homicide detective who was simply waiting for a train, the cops reluctantly enlist his equally reluctant help in solving the crime. The 109-minute drama co-stars Warren Oates and Lee Grant.
Wednesday at noon, a Jazz at Noon concert will take place on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin, Davies Center). Refreshments will be sold.
Continuing through Aug. 5, UW-Eau Claire Summer Session Programs are sponsored, in part, by Central Radio Group (WAXX-FM, WAYY-AM, WIAL-FM, WECL-FM, and WEAQ-AM). A complete schedule is available from the Activities and Programs Office, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833.
