MIS Scholarship at UW-Eau Claire
MAILED: June 10, 1999|
Starting this fall semester, students in the Management Information Systems program at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire can take advantage of a scholarship established by Federated Insurance, a multiple line insurance carrier based in Owatonna, Minn.
The annual award of $1,000 will be available to qualified MIS students with 90 or more credits who have demonstrated leadership skills and involvement in extracurricular activities, and who express an interest in and aptitude for a career in information services.
Jim Stephani, technology support services manager at Federated Insurance, said the company thought the scholarship would be a good way to reward hard work among MIS majors.
"We are a ways away from Eau Claire but we have a number of UW-Eau Claire graduates working here," he said. "We find the MIS program fits well here because it combines programming concepts and techniques with a good business background. This is a good mix for our company."
Credit for the scholarship coming to UW-Eau Claire can be given to all MIS faculty, who on numerous occasions have worked with Federated Insurance recruiters, said Bill Korn, chair of the MIS department. Credit also is due to alumni who are currently working with the company.
"Federated Insurance has targeted the UW-Eau Claire MIS program as a key school to recruit qualified MIS personnel," Korn said. "Funding the scholarship is one tangible way of them demonstrating their commitment. UW-Eau Claire and the MIS Department appreciate and applaud the effort made by Federated Insurance in establishing the student scholarship."
The scholarship not only will allow students to attend the university who may not otherwise have been able to do so, but it will also help the university attract outstanding students who know a possibility exists for them to be awarded a significant scholarship, Korn said.
The Federated Insurance MIS scholarship will accompany the departments two other scholarships: two $500 annual scholarships sponsored by 3M Corp. and two $500 annual scholarships sponsored by Cargill Inc.
