Seventh Annual Student Research Day|
Slated For April 26-27 at UW-Eau Claire
MAILED: April 21, 1999|
Students and faculty will showcase their collaborative research efforts during the seventh annual Student Research Day April 26-27 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
More than 172 posters will be on display, representing student and faculty collaborative research projects from 31 university departments. The presentations represent work by 285 students in collaboration with 105 faculty mentors.
Posters will be on display from noon to 8 p.m. April 26 and from 8 a.m. to noon April 27. Undergraduate and graduate student authors and faculty mentors will be with their posters and willing to discuss their projects from noon to 3:30 p.m. April 26. Awards will be presented during a reception slated for 3:30-5 p.m. April 26 in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center.
"The event will highlight student research accomplishments and the important role faculty and academic staff play as mentors in the scholarly activity process," said Christopher Lind, assistant dean for research at UW-Eau Claire. "This is an opportunity to observe the diverse nature of research being conducted on campus."
With numerous departments represented at the day, Student Research Day has truly become a university-wide event, Lind said, noting that the growing number of posters displayed each year reflects the increased amount of collaborative research taking place at UW-Eau Claire. The use of differential tuition dollars continues to make such projects possible in all departments on campus, Lind said, adding that summer research projects also are now regularly funded.
Six judges will be on campus to evaluate Student Research Day presentations in the categories of Arts and Humanities, Business and Professional, Behavioral and Social Sciences, and Natural and Physical Sciences. The judges will be George Vogt, director of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin; Bonnie Sherman, chair of the department of psychology at St. Olaf College in Minnesota and a counselor for the Council on Undergraduate Research, Division of Psychology; Suzanne Matthew, executive director of the Area Health Education Center Inc.; Daniel Call, director of research for Lake Superior Research Institute; Joy Zedler, Aldo Leopold chair in restoration ecology at UW-Madison; and Joseph Stewart, directorate for Education and Human Resources at the National Science Foundation.
