With the holidays fast approaching, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire musical ensembles are preparing for the 1998 Holiday Concerts.
The annual concert brings together Brass Choir, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Women's Concert Chorale, Symphonic Choir, Concert Choir and the Singing Statesmen to perform festive music at 2 and 5 p.m. Dec. 6 in Zorn Arena.
Brass Choir will open the concert with "Celebration" by Keith Snell, Symphonic Choir will follow with "Climb to the Top of the Highest Mountain" by Carolyn Jennings, and the Singing Statesmen will sing "Haec Dies" by Jacob Handl and F. Melius Christiansen's "Beautiful Savior."
Wind Ensemble will perform Copland's "Variations on a Shaker Melody" and "A Sussex Mummer's Christmas Carol," then Women's Concert Chorale will sing Elgar's "The Snow," with senior Lisa Whipkey and junior Ryan Poquette accompanying on violins. Brass Choir will come back to perform Leroy Anderson's "Suite of Carols," Concert Choir will sing John Ness Beck's "Gloria" and "Here's a Pretty Little Baby" by Andre Thomas, and Symphony Orchestra will play selections from Bizet's "Carmen Suite."
The entire group of 450 performers will join together in the traditional performance of Ross Hastings' "Joy of Christmas." This collage of carols was commissioned and premiered in 1989 and has concluded all Holiday Concerts since its first performance.
