The music of jazz greats Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, Jerome Kern and Dean Sorenson is coming to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Jazz Ensemble III, under the direction of Robert Baca, will perform the music of the jazz greats during its fall concert. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Opening the concert will be Ellington's "Daybreak Express," followed by "In the Still of the Night" by Jerome Kern. During the first half of the concert, Jazz III will perform "First Born" by Dean Sorenson, Steve Sample's "Allison's Tune," and "A Tribute To Louie," arranged by Rich Matteson.
After a brief intermission, the ensemble will return to play Watts' "Joyous Reunion," "Snapshots" by UW-Eau Claire music professor Michael Cunningham, Sorenson's "My Man Benny," "Skylark" by Hoagy Carmichael and "No Blues" by Dave Singley.
Various jazz students will be featured soloists throughout the concert.
"This is the best Jazz Ensemble III we've ever had," Baca said. "Much of the literature was on past Jazz Ensemble I CDs."
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, are $4.75 for adults, $3.75 for seniors, children under 18, or faculty/staff with a university ID, or $1.25 for students with a university ID. -30- JV/JB
