The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire chapter of Habitat for Humanity will sponsor Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Oct. 12-16.
Events have been scheduled throughout the week to promote awareness of hunger and homelessness in the Chippewa Valley.
A food drive will be held on campus beginning Monday, Oct. 12, and will run through Saturday, Oct. 24. Students can donate non-perishable food items in boxes located in all residence hall lobby areas and in Davies Center. Donated items will be given to the St. Francis Food Pantry and the Feed My People Food Bank.
Students, faculty and the public can participate in the Buck-a-Board event Wednesday, Oct. 14, on the Central Campus Mall. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., participants may donate $1 and sign their name on a board that will be used to build a Habitat for Humanity house. The proceeds are used to purchase materials for home construction.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, also on the Central Campus Mall, Skip-A-Meal donations can be made by those wishing to contribute the cost of a meal to hunger- and homelessness-related causes.
A candlelight vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at the Ecumenical Religious Center, 110 Garfield Avenue. Students and members of the public will share songs and readings focusing on hunger and homelessness. Following the vigil, a shantytown will be set up on the Central Campus Mall.
