EAU CLAIRE -- Dr. Karl Markgraf has been named director of the Center for International Education at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.He will begin his duties at UW-Eau Claire Aug. 1.
Markgraf currently serves as director of International Programs at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. He has held that position since 1994.
At UW-Eau Claire, Markgraf will provide vision and leadership in all aspects of international education for the university's faculty, staff and students; collaborate with deans, department chairs and faculty to enhance international content of courses; support area studies and other international initiatives; pursue external support for international education; and oversee and develop the foreign student services and study abroad units with the Center for International Education.
Prior to accepting the position in Michigan, Markgraf was the director of International Programs, chair of European Studies and assistant professor of German at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., and international studies officer at Associated Colleges of the South in Atlanta.
He has lived and/or worked in Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand and Yugoslavia.
Markgraf earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Oregon and his master's and doctoral degrees at UW-Madison. He earned his doctorate in German.
Markgraf will replace C. Robert Frost, who is retiring in June.
