EAU CLAIRE - The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present a Jazz III Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The ensemble is under the direction of Robert Baca.
Jazz Ensemble III has a membership of 20 students who are primarily freshmen and sophomores. They represent some of the finest freshman and sophomore musicians in the area, Baca said.
The ensemble will present pieces including "Chicago" by Don Rader, "Round Midnight" by Thelonius Monk, "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me" by Duke Ellington, "Low Key Lightly" by Ellington and "Licks" by Adi Yeshaya.
After a short intermission, the ensemble will continue with "Casey Dog Blues" by Marco Katz, "Para Mi Ciudad" by Katz and "Always and Forever" as composed by Pat Metheny.
The concert will close with "Chop Suey" by Matt Harris. "Chop Suey" is the most difficult piece technically in the concert. It's a funk, 16th note selection that will make the audience want to dance in the aisles, Baca said.
Tickets for the concert are $3.75 for the general public; $2.75 for senior citizens, youths and faculty and staff; or free for students with a University ID. Tickets may be purchased at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727.
