EAU CLAIRE -- More than 170 students from 17 western Wisconsin high schools participated in the 16th annual regional Mathematics Meet earlier this month at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The La Crosse Logan team, the Power Rangers, earned first place in the large school AAA division with 219 points. The Chippewa Falls team, the Calculating Cardinals, won second place with 166 points.
The Power Rangers team featured Cheryl Barkauskas, Brian Barrett, Ryan Dunn, Philip Matchett, Peter Tyler and Joe Westbrook.
With 40 points, Matchett and Dunn of La Crosse tied for first place in Class AAA. Each were offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship, funded by a grant from Northern States Power to the UW-Eau Claire mathematics department.
Second-place class AAA honors went to Peter Tyler of La Crosse Logan with 35 points. La Crosse's Cheryl Barkauskas took third place with 33 points. Tyler was offered a $200 UW-Eau Claire scholarship and Barkauskas a $100 scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.
The Durand team, the Durand Cubes, won first place in the medium school AA division with 199 points. The La Crosse Aquinas team, Axes, placed second with 151 points.
The Durand team featured Jana Bates, Jake Dettinger, Jason Richardson, Alex Stompel, Reanna Titus and Jessica Woodworth.
Alex Stompel placed first in Class AA individual honors with 33 points. Scoring 30 points and tying for second place were Barrett Brenner and Jonathan Holt of Mondovi and Brad Hakes of Stanley-Boyd.
Stompel was offered a $500 scholarship to UW-Eau Claire. Brenner, Hakes and Holt were offered $300 scholarships.
In the small school A division, the Plaid Monkeys from Rib Lake placed first with 179 points. Cashton's Conics placed second with 155 points.
Rib Lake's team consisted of Heather Acker, Jennifer Hebda, Tammy Lind, Bryan Marschke, Karla Potratz and Michael Rusch.
Michael Rusch from Rib Lake scored 40 points to win the first place individual honors in the Class A division. He was offered a $500 scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.
Amanda Johnson, Cashton, scored 33 points to take second place. Abe Kazemzadeh of Regis High School in Eau Claire, Christina Handorf of Prairie Farm and Leann Wiese of Augusta tied for third place with 30 points. Johnson was offered a $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarship. Kazemzadeh, Handorf and Wiese were offered $200 scholarships to UW-Eau Claire.
Other Class AAA individual winners were Patrick Sweeney and Charles Fastner from Chippewa Falls.
Other Class AA individual winners were Jim Blaun from Royall and Ian Schwartz of Osseo-Fairchild.
Mark Ridenour from Regis placed sixth in Class A.
The winning La Crosse team was advised by Mark Englerth. Dean Brunner advised the first-place Durand team, and Jerry Blomberg advised the Rib Lake team.
Other advisers were Jeff Keding of Chippewa Falls, Chuck Schmidt of La Crosse Aquinas, and Gary Dickinson of Cashton.
