Winter Carnival Planned
at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE - The schedule of activities for Winter Carnival 1998 is set for Feb. 18-22 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Highlights include a concert by Little Blue Crunchy Things, an improvisational comedy show featuring ComedySportz, a midnight screening of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," and Cabin concerts by L.J. Booth. The celebration also sets campus groups and individuals in competition with each other in a variety of tournaments. Events are free unless noted.
* Wednesday: The festival begins at 2 p.m. with winter activities on the Challenge Ropes Course located behind Crest Wellness Center. Registration information is available from University Recreation, (715) 836-3616.
A Jazz at Night concert will begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday in The Cabin, Davies Center.
* Thursday: Laser Arena, a 40-foot square burnt out space station where participants can play space-age tag, will be set up from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Davies Center's Willow Lounge.
Cross-country ski and snowshoe demonstrations, snow shelter construction in preparation for overnight camping, and outdoor cooking activities will take place all Thursday afternoon and evening on the Central Campus Mall.
A dog sledding demonstration will take place from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday on upper campus. Free rides will be given.
A van will leave at 3 p.m. Thursday for an evening of downhill skiing at the Coffee Mill Ski Area near Wabasha, Minn. The trip is limited to 20 participants; the fee is $15 and does not include the cost of a lift ticket. More information is available from University Recreation, (715) 836-3377.
Tournament competition begins Thursday with eight-ball billiards from 7 to 10 p.m. at Hilltop Center.
Mountaineer and adventurer Matt Culberson will present a slide-lecture titled "Climbing K2," a presentation about his 1995 expedition to climb the second-largest mountain in the world, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Davies Center's Winnebago Room.
"In the Company of Men" will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre. Tickets are $1 for UW-Eau Claire students or $2 for UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727. IFS memberships are available for $4 at the Service Center.
Songwriter-musician L.J. Booth will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in The Cabin, Davies Center. Refreshments will be sold.
* Friday: Tournaments continue with broomball at 4 p.m. at the Crest Wellness Center ice rink.
A lantern light ski/snowshoe walk will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the McPhee Center. Participants may pick up equipment free of charge at the Outdoor Recreation Rental Center in Hilltop Center, (715) 836-3616.
ComedySportz -- a fast-paced comedy competition complete with referee, points and penalties -- will be presented at 9 p.m. in the Council Fire Room. Two teams of comedians will improvise a series of comedy sketches based on audience suggestions. Tickets are $5 ($3 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door.
Sneakers Dance Club, the campus alcohol-free bar in Crest Wellness Center, will throw Winter Carnival Mardi Gras parties at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The cover charge is $2; a college or university ID card is required for admission.
A Winter Carnival tradition continues with a screening of the popular cult film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at midnight Friday in the Council Fire Room. Roger Ebert has called the 1975 film "not so much a movie as more of a long-running social phenomenon." Tickets are $2 for UW-Eau Claire students, UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff and International Film Society members at the Service Center and the door.
* Saturday: Tournaments continue Saturday with broomball at 10 a.m. at the Crest Wellness Center ice rink and snow softball at 10 a.m. on Towers Recreational Fields 1 and 2.
Breakfast will be accompanied by Looney Tunes cartoons from 11 a.m. to noon in Davies and Hilltop cafeterias.
An ice fishing contest will run from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday on Eau Claire's Half Moon Lake.
A concert featuring Little Blue Crunchy Things, with special guests Freshwater Collins and Green Scene, will begin at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Council Fire Room. Tickets are $7 ($5 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the Service Center and the door. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required in the bar area.
* Sunday: Winter Carnival activities conclude with moonlight bowling from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at Hilltop Center.
Pre-registration is required for all tournaments. Entry forms and rules are available at University Recreation in Hilltop Center and the Activities and Programs Office in Davies Center. All winning teams receive Winter Carnival T-shirts.
