EAU CLAIRE -- Twenty-seven University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students were initiated into the Society of Participating Honor Students at the organization's initiation ceremony Nov. 18.
SOPHS acknowledges and encourages outstanding scholastic achievement and significant service to the university, said Paula Stuettgen, UW-Eau Claire student activities coordinator and one of the organization's faculty advisers.
Each year SOPHS sponsors a telethon, in conjunction with the campus television station, to raise money for a local charity.
Membership is open to students who have achieved sophomore standing, who were in the top 35 percent of their freshman class, and who have demonstrated service to UW-Eau Claire.
Karen Phillippi, a biology major from Chippewa Falls, was elected president of the group. Other officers are Kris Vetsch, vice president, a nursing major from Mabel, Minn.; Jessica Meier, secretary, an undeclared major from Brookfield; Melissa Knutson, treasurer, an accounting and finance major from White Bear Lake, Minn.; and Kathryn Wahl, parliamentarian, a criminal justice major from Eau Claire.
