EAU CLAIRE -- A free outdoor concert by the groove-rock group Cartoon Water will open the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Summer Session Programs for the week of July 21. The Music on the Mall show will begin at 7 p.m. Monday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: Schofield Auditorium). Refreshments will be sold.
Cartoon Water's rock plus blues plus jazz plus funk sound pays homage to classic artists such as the Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix, and new groups like the Dave Matthews Band, Phish and Blues Traveler.
Also on campus during the week of July 21 are these free Summer Session Programs:
- "Fargo," Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 Oscar nominee for Best Picture, will screen Tuesday and Thursday at noon and 7 p.m. in Davies Theatre. A study of a simple crime gone horribly wrong, the 97-minute film is rated R.
"'Fargo' begins with an absolutely dead-on familiarity with smalltown life in the frigid winter landscape of Minnesota and North Dakota," wrote critic Roger Ebert. "Then it rotates its story through satire, comedy, suspense and violence, until it emerges as one of the best films I've ever seen."
- The Robert Baca Quartet will present a jazz concert from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday on the Central Campus Mall (rain: The Cabin, Davies Center). Refreshments will be sold.
Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 7. A schedule is available from the Activities and Programs Office, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4833.
