EAU CLAIRE -- Eighteen University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students were awarded scholarships during the Communication and Journalism Convocation April 17. Jaime Schroeder, a junior journalism major from Menomonie, received the $250 Cindy Schott Humanitarian Award. Salina Heller, a senior journalism major from Black River Falls, and Katy Pratt, a sophomore journalism major from Lake Geneva, were awarded $250 William Randolph Hearst Scholarships. Sophomore Melody Langacker, a journalism major from Fond du Lac, won a $500 Arthur L. Murray Memorial Journalism Award. The $175 James Fields Scholarship was given to Ami Bunio, a junior journalism major from Rogers, Minn. Three students received $500 Lee and Esther Sanford Hench Scholarships. Receiving the awards were Chris Carr, a junior journalism major from Eden Prairie, Minn., Craig McHugh, a junior journalism major from Madison, and Scott Peterson, a junior journalism major from Deerfield. Peterson also received a $250 Leslie D. Polk Scholarship. Carr received a $500 Marshall B. Atkinson Scholarship. Rhonda McCauley, a senior journalism major from Muscoda, was awarded the Erwin W. Kaiser Scholarship in the amount of $250. Senior journalism major Tom Corless, Bloomington, Minn., was awarded the Joanne Friedrick Journalism Scholarship in the amount of $250. Senior Randi Steen, a communications major from Superior, received a $200 Excellence in Communication Award. Jeremy Ripp, a senior journalism major from Middleton, was awarded the Robert Smith Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Graphics in the amount of $50. Six students were awarded 1996-97 Milwaukee Foundation's Journal Foundation-Walter Jay and Clara Charlotte Damm Scholarships in the amount of $500. Recipients included Peterson; Stacy Janisch, a sophomore journalism student from Maplewood, Minn.; Michael Kenevan, a senior journalism student from Brooklyn Park, Minn.; Bradley Mayer, a junior history major from Brillion; Janal Meyer, a senior journalism major from Auburndale; and Jennifer Schultz, a junior journalism major from Spicer, Minn. Matthew Wise, a political science major from New Berlin, was awarded a $1,000 1996-97 Milwaukee Foundation's Journal Foundation-Walter Jay and Clara Charlotte Damm Scholarship. -30- JB
