MAILED: April 30, 1997

EAU CLAIRE -- The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of kinesiology and Human Sciences and Services Outreach will co-sponsor the Fitness Over Fifty Spring Training Series Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1.

The Fitness Over Fifty Spring Training Series is intended for individuals who are over 50 and interested in participating in some form of exercise activity. The short sessions are designed to those with no experience in the activity as well as those who may need a refresher lesson. Each session offers hands-on experience with a seasoned instructor.

"Fundamentals of the Golf Swing" will be offered 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 31, in the McPhee Physical Education Center, Olson Addition. Sandra Schumacher, the assistant Blugold women's golf coach at UW-Eau Claire who retired in 1994, will instruct the session. This session is for people who want to start golfing or those who need to brush up on their golf swing. The session starts with the short game swing and builds to the full swing. Clubs, balls and tees are provided. The cost of this session is $20.

The second session, "Preparing for Lifetime Fitness," will provide information on basic fitness for those who want to get in shape but aren't sure how to start. The session will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 31, in the McPhee Physical Education Center. Arlyn Stertz, leader of Club Ped and a retired physical education teacher who has worked with a variety of age groups, will lead the session. The session includes stretching, walking and the use of free weights which helps to build bone density and prevent osteoporosis. The cost of this session is $20.

"Fly Casting Technique" will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in the McPhee Physical Education Center, Olson Addition. Many people believe fly casting is as much for the soul as for the sport, and it's also an excellent way to develop upper body fitness. This session will introduce participants to the basic techniques of fly casting and give opportunity to try techniques. Rods will be provided. The Rev. Don Wisner, Lutheran campus pastor, professional fly fishing guide, member of the Midwest Fly Fishing Schools staff, fly casing instructor, and outdoor writer will instruct the session. The cost of this session is $20.

Early registration is encouraged as all class sizes are limited. Sessions are $20 each, two for $35 or all three for $50.

For more information or to obtain a brochure and registration form, call (715) 836-3990.
