EAU CLAIRE - The Housing and Residence Life Office at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is now recruiting for the "Take a Wing Under Your Wing" program for the 1997-98 academic year. The program is designed to create opportunities for students to make connections with faculty and academic staff in natural, student life-orientated settings. As participants in the program, faculty and academic staff members break from their traditional, professional role on campus and become honorary wing members in the residence halls. Research consistently shows the more connected a student feels with the university, the more likely he or she is to succeed at the university, said Margaret Hallatt, associate director of Housing and Residence Life. The first six weeks of a new student's time on campus is crucial for students to make connections, Hallatt said. The program provides an opportunity for all participants to gain perspectives about each other as people outside of the established student, faculty and academic staff roles into which they naturally fall within the campus community. Interested faculty or academic staff who are not invited by a resident assistant to participate by Tuesday, April 29, can e-mail Margaret Hallatt at hallatmm@uwec.edu to volunteer to become a "winger."
