Events Scheduled for Celebration of Honors Week 1997

EAU CLAIRE - The 25th annual Scholastic Honors Week will be held April 14-19 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The week is designed to recognize UW-Eau Claire students of high scholastic achievement.

Several programs that are free and open to the public have been scheduled by participating groups, said Robert Shaw, associate dean of students and coordinator of Honors Week. Events will be held in Davies Center at UW-Eau Claire.

At 11:30 a.m. Monday, April 14, the Honors Program Organization will sponsor a panel discussion by former honor students in the Badger Room. Students can vote for the Professor of the Year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday, April 16, in the East Lobby. The Professor of the Year Award is sponsored by Kappa Delta Pi and the Future Teachers' Club.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sigma Delta Pi will sponsor the Juego Florales-Poetry Reading Competition. in the Presidents Room. The initiation for Order of Omega will begin at 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Presidents Room.

At 4 p.m. Wednesday, Omicron Delta Epsilon will sponsor a faculty debate on social security in Davies Theater. The debate will be followed at 6 p.m. by a reception in the Skylight Lounge. Mortar Board will sponsor the Last Lecture Series at 4 p.m. in the Alumni Room.

On Thursday, April 17, the Order of Omega will sponsor the Essay Award and Reception at 4 p.m. in the Presidents Room. Initiation and presentation of the Karl Andresen Scholarship Award, sponsored by Pi Sigma Alpha, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room. The Annual SOPHS Telethon will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the TV-10 Studio in Towers Hall.

Pi Kappa Lambda will sponsor Honors at the Opera, featuring "Don Giovanni" by Mozart, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 18, in Phillips Recital Hall.

Several honor society initiations will be held Saturday, April 19, including: Sigma Theta Tau at 10:30 a.m. in Davies Theater with a reception following at 11:30 a.m. in the Skylight Lounge; Alpha Lambda Delta at 12:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium; Kappa Delta Pi at 1 p.m. in the Alumni Room; Phi Kappa Phi at 1 p.m. in Davies Theater; and Beta Alpha Psi at 2 p.m. in the Presidents Room. A combined reception for all honor societies will begin at 2 p.m. in the Council Fire Room, sponsored by the Alumni Association and Honors groups. Also on Saturday, initiation for Kappa Mu Epsilon will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room; Phi Eta Sigma will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Davies Theater; Beta Gamma Sigma initiation at 3 p.m. in the Alumni Room; and Omicron Delta Kappa at 3:30 p.m. in the Presidents Room.

A banquet honoring society members and students who have achieved outstanding scholastic recognition will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Spruce and Tamarack Rooms of Davies Center. Scholarship and award recipients will be recognized by faculty, Chancellor Larry Schnack and Provost/Vice Chancellor Marjorie Smelstor. Contrapunctus Brass and the Innocent Men will provide the entertainment.

On Sunday, April 20, the initiation ceremony for Mortar Board will begin at 11:30 a.m. on the Central Campus Mall. If the weather is poor, the ceremony will be held in Davies Theater. A brunch sponsored by Mortar Board will begin at noon in the Dulany Inn.
