EAU CLAIRE - The Jazz II Ensemble will present a concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. It will be directed by Ron Keezer, associate professor of music and theatre arts.
The program will begin with "Walkin" with arrangement by Geoff Keezer, "Red Tape Blues" by Geoff Keezer, "Three and One" by Thad Jones, "Come Rain or Come Shine" by Mercer & Arlen with arrangement by George Stone, and "Latin Dance" by Bob Mintzer."
After the intermission, there will be a tribute to Dominic Spera, professor of music at Indiana University. Spera's contributions to music have gained him international recognition in the jazz curriculum as well as the performing arts. From 1968 to 1977, Spera nurtured the jazz ensembles at UW-Eau Claire. He is affectionately known as the "Vince Lombardi" of the Eau Claire jazz program. He brought the groups to national attention and repute through hard work, attention to basics and a "never lose sight of the goal" professional attitude.
Spera will retire from Indiana University in May 1997. The music by Dominic Spera that will be performed at the concert will include "One for Woody," "Make a Joyful Noise," "All God's Children," "Blue Bones" and "Tambo."
Tickets for the concert will be $3.50 for the general public; $2.50 for senior citizens, children under 18 and faculty and staff; or free with a UW-Eau Claire ID. Tickets are available in the lobby of the Fine Arts Center.
