EAU CLAIRE - Juliet Messina, a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire junior, has been named recipient of the Laurence A. And Frances L. Weinstein Merit Scholarship for the 1997-98 academic year. The scholarship will cover tuition and fees for Messina's senior year.
Messina, a business marketing major from New Richmond, was recognized for her outstanding academic achievement.
Two Weinstein scholarships are awarded each year. One scholarship is given to a student attending UW-Madison, Weinstein's alma mater, and a second scholarship is awarded to a student attending another UW institution. The scholarships are directed to students of color who are currently underrepresented in the UW System. Scholarship winners must be of junior or senior standing, have demonstrated outstanding academic ability, and be majoring in business.
The annual scholarships are endowed by a $50,000 gift from the Weinsteins to the UW System Board of Regents. Weinstein served on the board from 1984 to 1991 and was a two-term regent president.
In a congratulatory letter, UW System President Katharine Lyall told Messina that she was selected from a competitive field of candidates. "You have demonstrated solid academic performance and impressive extracurricular interests," Lyall wrote. "In this age of change in business education, you have proven yourself to be a truly outstanding student. Your selection as a Weinstein scholar provides appropriate testimony to your talent, hard work and determination."
