EAU CLAIRE - Vocal Jazz Fest 1997 is slated for April 3 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The annual festival will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude with a 7:30 p.m. concert. All events will be held in Gantner Concert Hall of the Fine Arts Center.
The jazz fest will be an adjudicated event open to high school and college vocal jazz ensembles. Participating ensembles can perform for comments only or for ratings.
The top ensembles will be invited to perform during an evening concert with UW-Eau Claire's Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Vox One, the guest ensemble, from Berklee College of Music in Boston. The members of Vox One will also be the fest's adjudicators.
Vox One has received rave reviews in the United States and Japan, and has fronted for several leading jazz ensembles. The award-winning a cappella vocal group combines jazz with elements of gospel, funk, blues and folk.
Vox One member Paul Stiller is a UW-Eau Claire alumnus who helped start the university's a cappella ensemble the Innocent Men. Stiller, tenor/vocal drums, is on the faculty at Berklee College in Boston where Vox One members first came together in 1988 to record an arrangement for a class project.
"Vox One is more polished than Manhattan Transfer," Daniel Newman, a UW-Eau Claire assistant professor of music, said of the guest artists.
The group's principal arrangers, Stiller, Paul Pampinella and Yumiko Matsuoka, write many pieces as if for an instrumental band, using vocal drums, vocal bass lines, textured backgrounds, and scat solos, reminiscent of a jazz fusion or blues band.
Vox One has opened for Ray Charles, Chicago, the Persuasions, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Count Basie Orchestra. The group has released three CDs.
Vocal Jazz Fest 1997 will start at 9:30 a.m. April 3 with participating ensembles' performances and clinics. Each ensemble will have 30 minutes of performance and clinic time.
Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. concert cost $6 for the general public, $5 for faculty and staff, or $3 with a UW-Eau Claire student ID. Tickets to the jazz fest concert are available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727, and at the door. The jazz clinics held during the day are free.
