MAILED: March 14, 1997 EAU CLAIRE - During the annual Sigma Tau Delta English Honors Society International Competition this winter, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Theta Zeta Chapter was named to receive the Outstanding Chapter Award. UW-Eau Claire Sigma Tau Delta President Michael Ball will receive a $300 award and a plaque at the upcoming convention in Savannah, Ga. Recent honors and achievements of the chapter include paper presentations by two student delegates at the national Sigma Tau Delta conference as well as seven members who were sent to participate in the regional conference. During last year's University Honors Banquet, Jennifer Kushnier, Sigma Tau president, emceed and Sigma Tau member Jason Hedrington received second place honors for his speech. Members have been involved in English-related activities such as judging Shakespeare papers for the English department's Shakespeare Festival last spring, sponsoring trips to theatrical productions and poetry readings, holding fundraising events and giving The Big Fish Award for outstanding teaching to an English professor. Sigma Tau members work to encourage a broader base of students who are willing to read and present their written works. Guests also are brought in to speak at Sigma Tau's bi-monthly meetings. Sigma Tau Delta -- the International English Honors Society -- has more than 500 active chapters here and abroad. The Theta Zeta chapter has 30 active members. Its adviser is Dr. Jennifer Shaddock, assistant professor of English..
