EAU CLAIRE -- More than 200 students from 25 western Wisconsin high schools participated in the 15th annual Regional Mathematics Meet held Saturday, Feb. 8, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The Eau Claire Memorial team, The Erratic Quadratics, took first place in the large school Class AAA division with 187 points. Members of the team include Jennifer Grump, Geir Helleloid, Erik Larsen, Mike Murphy, Dave Rivers and Joe Walker. The La Crosse Logan team, the Power Rangers, won the second-place trophy with 145 points.
Aaron Swoboda, Chippewa Falls, took first place in the Class AAA individual honors with 32 points. Swoboda was offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship funded by a grant from Northern States Power to the meet sponsor, the UW-Eau Claire mathematics department. Geir Helleloid of Eau Claire Memorial and Phillip Matchett of La Crosse Logan tied for second place with 30 points. Helleliod and Matchett were offered $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarships. Mike Murphy of Eau Claire Memorial took third place with 28 points and was offered a $100 scholarship.
The medium school Class AA division was led by the Panther Powers team of West Salem with 112 points. The Osseo-Fairchild team, the Optimistic Factios, placed second with 108 points. West Salem team members include Henry Bangsberg, Reuben Bigjohn, Gia Fortney, David Manthei, Matt Miller and Nick Young.
First place Class AA individual honors were awarded to Ben Monty, Royall, who scored 22 points. He was offered a $500 UW-Eau Claire scholarship. Tied for second place with 20 points each were Jana Bates and Jake Dettinger, both of Durand, and Katherine Warzynski from La Crosse Aquinas. These students were offered $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarships.
In the small school Class A division, the Broken Lobes from Rib Lake placed first with 106 points. Eau Claire Regis placed second with 101 points. Rib Lake team members include Heather Acker, Ben Dums, Tammy Lind, Bryan Marschke, Karla Potratz and Mike Rusch. Rusch scored 33 points for first place Class A individual honors and was offered a $500 scholarship for UW-Eau Claire. Abe Kazemzadeh from Eau Claire Regis took second place with 22 points and was offered a $300 UW-Eau Claire scholarship. Rob Ridenour from Eau Claire Regis was offered a $200 UW-Eau Claire scholarship after winning third place with 18 points. Finishing in fourth place with 17 points was Chris Theorin from Prairie Farm who was offered a $100 UW-Eau Claire scholarship.
Other Class AAA individual winners were Joe Walker and David Rivers of Eau Claire Memorial and Jake Schroeder of La Crosse Logan. Additional AA individual winners included Tyson Hammer, Kevin Indrebo, and Ethan Vaade of Osseo-Fairchild and Nick Young of West Salem. Other Class A individual winners were Bryan Marschke of Rib Lake and Mark Ridenour of Eau Claire Regis.
The winning Eau Claire Memorial team was advised by Patty Zwiefelhofer. Chris Milne advised the first-place West Salem team, and Robert Keegan advised Rib Lake, the first-place finisher in Class A. Other advisers were Mark Englertk of La Crosse Logan, Eloma Bartsch of Osseo-Fairchild and John McNamara of Eau Claire Regis.
