EAU CLAIRE - Campus and community organizations and programs will offer service opportunities to University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students, faculty/staff and the public during Community Action Day, set for Thursday, Jan. 30, at the UW-Eau Claire. People who wish to offer their time and talents to area service organizations on a voluntary basis will have a chance to explore such opportunities at the event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Because of the growth in the number of participating agencies and students, the event will be held in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center. A number of the represented agencies provide opportunities that enable students to receive university credit through several departments including the UW-Eau Claire department of social work, or to fulfill the new UW-Eau Claire service-learning requirement through the Community Action and Lifelong Learning Program. "The emphasis of Community Action Day is on service-learning," said Paula Stuettgen, student development coordinator at UW-Eau Claire and coordinator of the CALL program. "Through service, the volunteer learns more about the community and helps fill an identifiable need. The university places an emphasis on service to one's community as a method of practicing the theories and methods learned in the classroom." CALL also publishes an annual directory and a bimonthly newsletter which list service opportunities and job descriptions, to help put individuals and organizations in touch with community agencies in need of volunteers. CALL is also the primary sponsor of the fall semester Into the Streets and spring semester Days of Caring community service initiatives. For copies of publications and more information about CALL and Community Action Day, contact the Activities and Programs Office, Davies Center 133, (715) 836-4803.
