UW-Eau Claire's Jumpstart Eau Claire program received $100,000 from the U.S. House Appropriations. The program trains students to work with early childhood programs in low-income areas to give one-to-one attention to children struggling in preschool. During the 2002-03 school year, 40 students provided 36 children individual Jumpstart sessions and assisted 260 kids. Nationally, at the end of the year, the Jumpstart children made a 17 percent greater gain in language and literacy skills than children not enrolled in the program. The $100,000 will help expand the program to serve more children, serve new parts of Wisconsin, train parents in pre-literacy methods, and recruit/prepare Jumpstart members to become Head Start teachers. For details, contact Jumpstart Eau Claire Site Manager Donna Lehmkuhl at (715) 836-6011 or
