EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Nov. 29. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, Nov. 29:
- Sophomore Kathryn Hurd, Fall Creek, will perform a student piano recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with "Novelette in C major" by Francis Poulenc and continue with "Liebestraum: Notturno I" by Franz Liszt. The concert will conclude with "Suite Bergamasque" by Claude Debussy.
Tuesday, Nov. 30:
- Junior Margaret Aspinwall, Madison, and senior Amanda Blaylock, De Pere, will perform a student voice recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with "Romance" by Claude Debussy and continue with pieces by Georges Bizet, Robert Schumann, Hugo Wolf, Gaetano Donizetti, Amadeo Vives, Jake Heggie and more. Aspinwall and Blaylock will conclude the performance with the duet "Bosom Buddies" by Jerry Herman, from the musical "Mame." Piano accompaniment will be provided by senior Stacie Olson, Neenah , and junior Melissa Sommers, Suamico.
- Senior David Snyder, La Crosse, will perform a cello recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with Suite No. 1 in G major for Unaccompanied Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach and continue with Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66 by Felix Mendelssohn. The concert will conclude with Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33 by Camille Saint-Saëns. Snyder will be assisted by Ryan Koelemay on piano and junior Allison Bulger, Mendota Heights , Minn., on violin.
- Junior Casey Anderson, Stillwater, Minn., will present a student composition recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Each piece will feature a variety of instruments, including the piano, bass, saxophone, trombone, bassoon and guitar. Anderson uses electronic elements, including a laptop, mixing board and guitar feedback, to create different textural music effects within his compositions. Several student performers will be featured in each of the four pieces.
- Baritone Jesús Martinez, a senior from Watsonville, Calif., will perform a student voice recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Martinez will be assisted by soprano Nicole Peters, a senior from Maplewood, Minn.; senior Phillip Dorn, Clintonville, providing piano and harpsichord accompaniment; junior Allison Bulger, Mendota Heights, Minn., on the violin; and senior Sacia Jerome, Barron, on cello. The program will begin with "Palido il Sole" by Johann Adolf Hasse and continue with pieces by Franz Schubert, Juan Canto Frances, Sebastían de Yradier, Felipe Valdez Leal, Richard Hundley and Maurice Ravel. The concert will conclude with "Dunque io Son" by Gioacchino Rossini.
Wednesday, Dec. 1:
- Junior Steven Hobert, Hartland, will present a student piano recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with "Mouvements Perpétuels" by Francis Poulenc and continue with "Bruyères" by Claude Debussy; "Feux-follets" by Isidore Philippe; and "Scherzo in B-flat minor, Op 31" by Frédéric Chopin. The second half of the program will feature Hobert's original compositions, including "Shadow Voices," "Expanding," "Kwafy," and "Little Mist." Several students will assist on a variety of instruments on each of the original compositions.
- UW-Eau Claire BASSically Brass, a tuba and euphonium ensemble under the direction of Jerry Young, professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will being with Fugue in G minor by J.S. Bach and continue with "Ubi Caritas" by Maurice Durufle, "March from '194'" by John Williams and "Tubamobile" by Thom Ritter George. The concert will conclude with "Entry of the Gladiators" by Julius Fucik.
- Tenor Michael Rambo, a senior from Altoona , will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with two pieces from the opera "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi and continue with works by Beethoven, Claude Debussy, Ned Rorem, David Diamond and more. The concert will conclude with "Meditation,." an original piece by Rambo. Senior Phillip Dorn, Clintonville, will provide piano accompaniment.
Thursday, Dec. 2:
- The UW-Eau Claire Voice Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, will perform at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Fifteen students will be featured in a variety of pieces. The program will include works by Leonard Bernstein, Gioacchino Rossini, Henry Purcell, Robert Schumann, Jules Massenet, John Corigliano, Stephen Sondheim, Ludwig van Beethoven and Edwin Penhorwood. Piano accompaniment will be provided by senior Stacie Olson, Neenah.
- Jazz Ensemble IV and Jazz Pedagogy Ensemble, under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The concert will include a Centennial Tribute to Glenn Miller. Four student directors will be featured, including senior Ben Herpel-Dobay, Salem; junior Steven Hobert, Hartland; junior Scott Currier, Brookfield; and senior David Whitman, Menomonie.
