EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Nov. 15. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, Nov. 15:
- Senior Andrei Strizek, Sun Prairie, will perform a student euphonium recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Strizek will be assisted by Roger Bethard on piano and freshman Kyle Scheible, Eden Prairie, Minn., on the flugelhorn. The program will begin with Cello Suite in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, continuing with Concerto per Flicorno basso, op. 155 by Amilcare Ponchielli and "Pastorale" by Eric Ewazen. The concert will conclude with Concert Variations composed by Jan Bach.
Tuesday, Nov. 16:
- Senior Yukiko Fujimura, Kanagawa, Japan, will perform a senior degree piano recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The first half of the program will feature Mozart’s Rondo in A minor and Sonata No. 3 in B minor by Frederic Chopin. The concert will conclude with Sonata No. 7 in B flat major by Sergei Prokofiev. Fujimura, a student of Dr. Alexandre Dossin, was the state winner in the piano competition at the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Performance Competition held recently in Appleton. She also took first place in the 2004 WMTA Badger Collegiate Piano Competition in May and second prize in the 2003 Schubert Club Competition in St. Paul, Minn.
- The Cane Mutiny Bassoon Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Performers include senior Kelli Hanson, Duluth, Minn.; senior Amy Van Maldegiam, Slinger; freshman Adrianne Neitzke, Menomonee Falls; sophomore Claire Tiller, Fridley, Minn., and Dr. Kristine Fletcher, senior lecturer. The group also will be assisted by the UW-Eau Claire Oboe Band. The program will include pieces by Vivaldi, Handel, Beethoven, J. Bodin de Boismortier, J.P. Sousa, Lowell Shaw and Vinicio Meza.
- The UW-Eau Claire Opera Workshop Ensemble, directed by Dr. Robert Knight, professor of music, and Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, will present "It's All About Love" at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Twelve students will be featured in various pieces, with sophomore Emily Weber, Marshfield, providing accompaniment. Program selections include Stephen Sondheim's "Little White House," from his musical "Marry Me a Little"; Aaron Copland's Act I duet from "The Tender Land"; selections from Gilbert and Sullivan's "Patience"; and more.
Wednesday, Nov. 17:
- The piano studio of Dr. Donald Patterson, professor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will feature sixteen students playing the music of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963). The majority of his piano works bear dedications to friends, family, lovers, patrons and contemporary composers, with a sense of sparkling cabaret life in each piece.
- Senior Kelli Hanson, Duluth, Minn., will perform a student bassoon recital at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. She will be accompanied by Beverly Soll on piano and assisted by Sean Hanson on the trumpet. The program will begin with Sonata for Bassoon and Piano by Alvin Etler and continue with "Valsas para Fagote Solo" by Francisco Mignone and "Concerto for Trumpet and Bassoon" by Paul Hindemith. The concert will conclude with "Sonatine" by Alexandre Tansman.
Thursday, Nov. 18:
- Senior Kristine Johnson, East Troy, will present a flute recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Roger Bethard will provide piano accompaniment. The program will begin with Sonata in B minor by J.S. Bach and continue with Odelette Op. 162 by C. Saint-Saëns and Nocturne Op. 17 by F. Doppler. The concert will conclude with a Sonata by Walter Piston.
