Highly Acclaimed Turkish Film
To Screen at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Oct. 21, 2004

EAU CLAIRE —"Distant," a 2002 Turkish drama that received three prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, will be presented Nov. 4-7 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"Distant" marks the unbridgeable distances that isolate two men who temporarily share an Istanbul flat. The film relates the story of two distant relatives — a bitter photographer (Muzaffer Ozdemir) and his undisciplined cousin (Mehmet Emin Toprak) from the country — who live together for a time in a great city of wintry melancholy.

In his four-star review of the film, Chicago Tribune critic called the film "a Chekhovian tale of major artistic power.

"'Distant' is a slow but stunning Turkish film, a beautifully crafted work that tells the kind of story only a movie can manage quite so well," Wilmington wrote. "It's a simple story. But Ceylan tells it with compassion, perception and sometimes mesmerizing visual beauty. A photographer like Mahmut, Ceylan shot this film and his images make Istanbul come alive in ways few films or filmmakers have managed. ... 'Distant' won the best actor award at Cannes for both Ozdemir and Toprak (who tragically died in a motorcycle accident after winning the Turkish Oscar for the same role)."

In Turkish subtitled in English, the 110-minute color film is not rated.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby, (715) 836-3727.

The film is sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire International Film Society.
