'Evil Dead II' Spews Gore
At UW-Eau Claire Oct. 28-31

 MAILED:  Oct. 18, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Evil spirits haunt a remote cabin in the Michigan woods in "Evil Dead II" (1987), a blood-soaked send-up of the terror genre that will screen Oct. 28-31 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Directed by Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man 2"), the film will screen at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Bruce Campbell ("Bubba Ho-tep") stars as Ash, a young man who takes his girlfriend to a secluded cabin and makes the mistake of playing a professor's tape-recorded recitation of passages from the Book of the Dead. The passage is actually a spell that calls up an evil force from the woods.

"Evil Dead II" (also known as "Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn") was Raimi's sequel/remake of his first feature, "The Evil Dead" (1983), made while the writer-director was in his late teens. "Army of Darkness" (1993) continued Ash's adventures against the Deadites.

"With their virtually nonstop geysers of blood, dismemberments and ghastly ugliness (the Evil Dead are not high on personal hygiene), these films are not for the faint-hearted or lily-livered — and definitely not for children," wrote Washington Post film critic Richard Harrington. "For adults, however, everything is so Out There, so comedically exaggerated, that there's no way to take the films seriously. Raimi and his crew certainly don't ... The acting is straight out of '50s B movies. The exposition is clumsy, the sound track corny, the denouement silly. Then again, who said bad taste was easy?"

The 85-minute film is rated R.

Tickets are $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire Students at the University Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby, (715) 836-3727. The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
