Documentary on Life of Paul Wellstone
To Screen at UW-Eau Claire Oct. 27

 MAILED:  Oct. 15, 2004

EAU CLAIRE —"Wellstone!" — a new documentary about late Democratic U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone of Minnesota — will be shown Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Co-director Lu Lippold will introduce and discuss the film, which will screen at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

"Wellstone!" tells the story of a charismatic Minnesota progressive who used grassroots organizing to get elected and give ordinary people a stake in government. Wellstone's third election campaign was cut short on Oct. 25, 2002, when his small plane crashed into the north woods of Minnesota just 11 days before the election.

The 90-minute film explores the origin of Wellstone's politics, his controversial road to the U.S. Senate, his deep bond with his wife and "co-senator" Sheila, and the legacy of a life of progressive populism.

Lu Lippold, one of the film's three directors, will introduce the "Wellstone!" and be on hand for discussion after the screening. Lippold has produced and directed award-winning documentaries and short films for corporations, agencies and non-profit organizations since 1991. Her independent documentaries and television segments have been distributed nationally and internationally. She currently teaches communications at St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn.

Admission is $2 for the public and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby, (715) 836-3727. The program is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
