On Faith, Politics and Democracy

 MAILED:  Oct. 15, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — An event titled "American Fundamentalists: The Modern Threat to Democracy and Faith" will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus Tuesday, Oct. 19.

Artist Joel Pelletier will be showing and discussing his monumental painting, "American Fundamentalists" (Christ's Entry into Washington in 2008)." The 8 x 14 ft. painting will be on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Skylight Lounge of Davies Center, followed by a panel discussion from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Davies Theatre.

Pelletier's controversial painting comments on the state of American politics in modern times, and he has stated that he aims to show his painting in as many places as possible before the Nov. 2 elections. The painting is sure to stir healthy debate and conversation.

"American Fundamentalists" is featured in a classified ad running in The Nation magazine from mid-September through November.

Discussions on the painting may include the roots, rise and agenda of 20th and 21st Century American political, economic and religious extremists and the current threat to democracy and the Constitution.

In the evening, Pelletier and other local participants will speak on a variety of topics, including religion, politics, art and history. Pelletier also will discuss the process involved in researching and executing his painting, which borrows inspiration from late 19th and 20th century western Art while attempting to be relevant in the 21st century.

This event is free and open to the public. Pelletier will be selling poster copies of his painting at the event. Sponsors for this event include the College Freethought Society and its affiliated organizations, the Progressive Student Association and the Secular Student Alliance.
