Campus Expert: Environmental Social Conflicts

Dr. Tarique Niazi, a lecturer in the department of sociology at UW-Eau Claire, specializes in environmental sociology. Niazi has written extensively on Pakistan, Rwanda and Chechnya, where he says resource conflicts have been presented as "religious terrorism," "ethnic conflict" and "genocidal hatred."

Niazi will teach a special topics course, titled "Environment and Social Conflicts," during January 2005's Winterim session. The course will trace the roots of social conflicts in ecological scarcities, and identify their material bases. It will specifically examine:
