EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Oct. 18. All events are free and open to the public.
Monday, Oct. 18:
- The UW-Eau Claire percussion ensemble, directed by Dr. Jeffery Crowell, assistant professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will start with "Raptures of Undream" by Bruce Hamilton and continue with "The Heat of the Day and "Minuano Six-Eight" by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays and "Ketiak" by Akira Nishimura. The second half will include "Lullaby" by Alvin Chea and Ivin Lins and end with Nebojsa Zivkovic's "Uneven Souls."
Tuesday, Oct. 19:
- The UW-Eau Claire tuba and euphonium studio of Dr. Jerry Young will present the annual OcTUBAfest Recital at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Students will perform tuba and euphonium pieces by John Stevens, J.S. Bach, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Vincent Persichetti, Joseph Horovitz and more. The recital will feature senior David Temple's arrangement of variations on the theme from "All Things Considered" by Don Voegeli.
Wednesday, Oct. 20:
- The UW-Eau Claire trombone ensemble, directed by Dr. Phillip Ostrander, assistant professor of music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with "La Morisque" by Tylman Susato and continue with works by Franz Schubert, J.S. Bach, Michael Hennagin, and Gustav Mahler. Ostrander will be the featured soloist in Fritz Velke's "Fantasia." The concert will conclude with "Reflections and Rattledance" by John Cheetham.
Thursday, Oct. 21:
- The UW-Eau Claire flute studio, instructed by Dr. Tim Lane, associate professor of music, will present a recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The students will perform pieces by F. Doppler, J.S. Bach, G. Handel, Robert Muczynski and more.
Friday, Oct. 22:
- Øystein Baadsvik will perform a guest tuba recital as a part of OcTUBAfest at 7:30 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Baadsvik will begin the program with Arild Plau's Concerto and continue with pieces by Anthony Plog, Alec Wilder, James Grant and Leonard Bernstein. He will conclude with three pieces from Edward Grieg: "Anitras Dance," "A Dream," and "Norwegian Dance No. 1." Pianist Jørgen Larsen will provide accompaniment. Baadsvik will also give a master class from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 23, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Sunday, Oct. 24:
- The UW-Eau Claire chamber orchestra, conducted by Paul Kosower, professor of music, will perform at 2 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with Lugi Boccherini's Concerto in B flat major for Violoncello and Orchestra. This piece will feature Kosower on the cello with Nobuyoshi Yasuda, assistant professor of music, acting as guest conductor. The second half of the program will be feature Symphony No. 5 in B flat major by Franz Schubert, conducted by Kosower.
- Dr. Christa Garvey, assistant professor of music, will present a faculty oboe recital at 4 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The program will begin with Edward Michael's "Rite de la Lune." Garvey will continue with Dan Welcher's "Mill Songs: Four Metamorphoses after Schubert," and "Nightwatches for Oboe and Amplified Piano" by Richard Toensing. The second half of the program will feature Miguel del Aguila's "Summer Song" and "Fantasy on Themes from Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto" by Giovanni Daelli.
