Theresa Wells Honored
For Work as Mentor to Students

 MAILED:  Sept. 29, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Theresa Wells, senior lecturer of management and marketing at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is the recipient of the National American Production and Inventory Control Society Student Chapter Mentor Award.

The award honors an operational management professional who has positively affected the lives of students and shown a commitment to the APICS vision, said Robert Sutton, chair of the management and marketing department at UW-Eau Claire. It will be presented to Wells next week at the APICS International Conference and Exposition in San Diego.

"Through this award APICS recognizes the unequaled dedication necessary to be a successful and influential role model," Sutton said. "It gives Terry the recognition she so deserves for the many hours and all of the work she has put into advising her students and the student APICS chapter."

Members of the student chapter nominated Wells for the award.

"It's a fantastic honor, especially because it started with the students who nominated me and wrote letters on my behalf," Wells said. "The best part of my job is being with students."

According to Sutton, Wells was selected for the award based upon her ability to demonstrate superior ability and involvement in leadership and innovation in mentoring activities, contributions to APICS, student chapter leadership and leadership in university and other professional associations and community service.

Wells has advised the UW-Eau Claire APICS student chapter for 11 years. Sutton said under her leadership the chapter has grown in size and in its commitment to serving the students. The chapter has developed networks with professional chapters across the state and has toured many companies. Members have made numerous presentations and competed at the national and regional levels.

"The operations major has long been viewed as something for guys," Sutton said. "But due to Terry's involvement, the number of female operation majors has grown along with their involvement in the APICS organization."

Wells has been a member of the university community since 1993. Earlier this year she received the UW-Eau Claire Excellence in Advising Award at the opening meeting of the academic year. She will serve as the Grand Marshal in the UW-Eau Claire Homecoming Parade Oct. 1 in recognition of her work with students.
