Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico
To Perform at UW-Eau Claire

 MAILED:  Sept. 28, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico will present an evening of Mexican dance, music and culture as part of the Artists Series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The swirling and rhythmic display of Mexico's ancient and modern traditions of folklore and dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Described by The New York Times as "one of the most beautifully costumed folk-dance companies to appear in New York in recent memory," the 35-member company from Mexico City draws its audience into the history of Mexico from ancient cultures through the 20th century.

Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico combines the nation's rich pre-Columbian heritage of ancient Mayan, Otomis, Aztec and Mestizo folk history, dance, costume and performance with modern rhythm and movement. Whistles, flutes, trumpets, occarinas, bells, rattles, scrapers, and metal, wood and clay drums will accompany the dances and songs representing religious and festive ceremonies.

Directed by Theo Shanab and choreographed by Lino Ortega, the company regularly performs in the United States and Canada and has appeared throughout Europe, Asia and South America.

Admission is $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Reserved seats are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center. The Service Center is open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders. General admission tickets will be sold at the door.

In addition to its Tuesday evening show, Ballet Gran Folklorico de Mexico will present a special matinee performance for children and adults Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 9:45 a.m. in Zorn Arena. All seats for the matinee performance are $5. Schools should make reservations in advance to facilitate seating of large groups.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support.
