Lunch Discussion with Louise Hogarth

 MAILED:  Sept. 27, 2004

Documentary filmmaker Louise Hogarth will lead a luncheon discussion from noon to 1 p.m. TODAY (Monday, Sept. 27) in the Presidents Room of Davies Center at UW-Eau Claire.

Hogarth also will join a panel discussion from 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28, in the Eagle Room of Davies Center. In addition to Hogarth, the filmmaker panel discussion will include Lee and Tuesday Burgess, filmmakers whose work dispels the stereotypes and negativity surrounding disability in films and television; and Cynthia Gray-Mash, a producer, writer, director and editor of documentaries, feature films and PSAs.

Hogarth will open the 63rd season of The Forum tonight (Monday, Sept. 27) and Tuesday, Sept. 28. Her 2003 film, "The Gift," documents the phenomenon of deliberate HIV infection. Hogarth's presentations in Schofield Auditorium will begin at 7:30 p.m. each evening with a screening of her 62-minute documentary. She will then lead a discussion of the issues raised in the film, and talk about the process of creating the documentary.

"The Gift" is an investigation into the eroticization by a sub-group of gay men of deliberate HIV infection. The film shines a balanced yet uncompromising light on the effectiveness of HIV prevention strategies and the mixed messages that continue to fuel a psychologically complex and potentially deadly game. Evenly presented yet unapologetically honest, Hogarth's film wades through tricky and fragile political waters without being preachy or judgmental as it follows the stories of men who have involved themselves in an all-too-real fantasy world, including the seductive realm of the Internet.
