Student Health Service Offers
Free Nicotine Patches to Students

 MAILED:  Sept. 17, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Student Health Service now offers free nicotine patches, a new service added to SHS's ongoing efforts to encourage smoking cessation. The free patches are available to students who smoke at least half a pack per day or use chewing tobacco daily and are interested in quitting.

“Through this program we can receive the patches free, so hopefully cost won't be a barrier to students trying to quit smoking and wanting to use some type of nicotine replacement to help them," said Dr. Joanne Mellema, a senior physician with SHS.

SHS also offers the new Fax-To-Quit program that allows students to request a professional cessation counselor to call them at a mutually negotiated time to provide additional support.

The Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention at the UW Medical School are providing funding for these services.

For more information, call SHS at 836-5360.
