Two Regional Funk-Rock Bands
To Perform at UW-Eau Claire Sept. 17

 MAILED:  Sept. 3, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Regional funk-rock bands Flavor and The Pipe Circus will perform Friday, Sept. 17, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The show will begin at 8 p.m. in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center and is open to all ages.

Flavor is a Minneapolis-based quartet that is quickly gaining fans across the Midwest and beyond. Known for its high-energy shows, Flavor plays music with a pop-rock sensibility laced with funky hooks, Latin rhythms and soulful melodies. Compositions resonate between expressive tales of love and regret to driving songs of suspense and cynicism.

Soon after starting to play live, Flavor was nominated for Best New Band for the 2002 Minnesota Music Awards. The band began winning a number of contests with its eclectic and moody live shows, including the 2002 KQRS Homegrown Contest, the Jim Beam Band of the Week Contest and the Best Band competition at St. Scholastica.

The Pipe Circus is a five-piece Madison-area group that has been together since early 1997. Often compared to bands such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Police and Sublime, the group is considered a fusion of funk, punk, reggae and rock with a splash of jazz.

The Pipe Circus has performed at premier music venues such as The Milwaukee Ale House, The Annex and The Rave, as well as over 30 festivals, including Summerfest from 2001-2004. The band is currently touring colleges in the Midwest and working on the release of its fourth CD.

Local favorite Amateur Love will open the show shortly after the doors open at 8 p.m. Volume One, the Eau Claire arts and events magazine, describes Amateur Love as a band that has "brilliantly avoided the usual rock & roll pitfalls and evolved into a sonically mature yet refreshingly new singer/songwriter art-pop band."

Tickets are $6 ($4 for UW-Eau Claire students) at the University Service Center in Davies Center's east lobby and at the door. The show is open to all ages; proof of age is required for beer purchases.

Patrons may charge tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call (715) 836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free (800) 949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The concert is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
