UW-Eau Claire Faculty and Staff Support
Campus Organizational Changes

 MAILED:  Aug. 25, 2004

EAU CLAIRE — Faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire today (Aug. 25) unanimously voted to support proposed organizational changes that would eliminate one college, create two new colleges and change the names of several departments at the university.

During a special faculty meeting, UW-Eau Claire faculty voted to:

"These changes are in the best interest of the university," Chancellor Donald Mash said of the changes he first proposed last spring. "We're making decisions that will position us to be more effective than we are today, both in terms of our performance and support for our work."

The creation of a College of Education and Human Sciences and a College of Nursing and Health Sciences, without the layer of Professional Studies, will bring more attention to critical public service areas that were less visible in the current college structure, Mash said. By making critical areas more visible, Mash hopes the university can better highlight the importance of all the programs included, while better utilizing the departments in human sciences and services by integrating them with their complementary departments of education and nursing.

Mash noted that faculty and staff have been supportive of the proposals since they were made public in May. "We know there are implementation challenges, but we're committed to making this work," he said. "This structure will be good for our university, our students and our public."

During the meeting, a number of faculty voiced their support for the organizational changes, with many saying the new structure will benefit faculty, students and the university as a whole. Faculty also noted their appreciation for being included in the process, which included numerous meetings with faculty, staff and administrators throughout the summer, and other opportunities for faculty to provide input.

Under the recommended structure, Katherine Rhoades, the current associate dean of the School of Education, will be named dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. Elaine Wendt, associate dean of the School of Nursing, will be named dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Pat Christopherson, associate dean of the School of Human Sciences and Services, will be named associate dean of the College of Education and Human Sciences. And Mary Zwygart-Stauffacher, professor of nursing systems, will be a part-time associate dean in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The proposal will go to the UW System Board of Regents for approval during its September meeting. All changes will go into effect immediately after the Regents' approval.
