UW-Eau Claire's 2004-05 academic year begins today, Monday, Aug. 23, with faculty and instructional staff returning to campus. Faculty and academic staff will gather for their opening meeting at 8:30-10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, in Schofield Auditorium. Chancellor Mash will give his "State of the University" address during the opening meeting. The session also will include the introduction of new faculty and staff members, presentation of faculty and staff awards, and remarks from the University Senate Chair and the Provost. The news media is welcome to attend the opening meeting.

UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff brought in nearly $14 million in grants from federal, state and private sources during the 2003-04 academic year - an all-time high for external funds secured by the university in a single academic year. The $13,841,402 in funds is a 6.8 percent increase over the dollars secured during 2002-03 and a 28 percent increase over external support received five years ago. The total includes all grants for research/sponsored programs and student financial aid. Extramural support for research has increased dramatically in the last five years - with an increase of more than 126 percent.
