UW-Eau Claire Geographer Researches Geography of the Marathon

 MAILED:  Aug. 18, 2004

Geography Professor Sean Hartnett spent time in Kenya in June observing and recording marathon world record holder Paul Tergat's training and lifestyle as he prepared for the 2004 Olympics.

Hartnett had intended to go to Athens for the Olympic Games but had difficulty obtaining press credentials for track and field events. Paul Tergat suggested that Hartnett instead go to Nairobi for the Kenyan Olympic Trials competition.

The Kenyan trip worked well as Hartnett was the only western journalist or photographer attending the Trials competition, and he spent the following week observing and photographing Tergat as he prepared to try to be Kenya's first gold medalist in the marathon.

Hartnett's stories and photos from the trip are on the Track & Field News Web site. Those items and an extensive set of marathon materials also are available on Hartnett's UW-Eau Claire Web site.

During his stay in Nairobi, Hartnett was asked to join the staff of Athlete, Kenya's foremost track publication. Hartnett will serve as a photo-journalist for that publication. The Athlete's most recent issue features 16 of Hartnett's pictures, including the cover photo from the 2004 World Cross Country Championships in Brussels.

Hartnett is available to talk with the media about his geography of the marathon research and his time in Kenya . You can reach him at (715) 834-7301 or
