Seattle Steel Drum Group to Open
UW-Eau Claire Artists Series

 MAILED:  Aug. 3, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - Bakra Bata Steel Drum Band - an eclectic, colorful, and energetic steel drum and dance ensemble - will open the Artists Series at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in Zorn Arena.

Based in Seattle, Bakra Bata is highly original and distinctly American, drawing from the root traditions of trans-Atlantic cultures as they have developed in the Americas. The steel drum, played in combination with a fascinating variety of other percussion instruments, is a visual and aural delight for audiences, and the music, with its emphasis on rhythmic modes and dance beats, creates an upbeat, joyous ambiance.

Bakra Bata's performance features colorful costumes, beautiful masks and dance. A remarkable blend of sophistication and energy, the band has been reported in the Los Angeles Times as creating "music that sidesteps cultural biases."

The concert is the first of eight Artists Series presentations this season, with an additional Artists Series Special by the Bruce Wood Dance Company in May. Details about series events follow:
