UW-Eau Claire Sophomore Named First
Amber Star Krenz Memorial Scholarship Recipient

 MAILED:  July 29, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire sophomore Mallory Willkom, Chippewa Falls, has been selected as the first recipient of the Amber Star Krenz Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created in memory of Krenz, a 22-year-old UW-Eau Claire student who died in November 2001 from complications related to meningococcal disease.

Krenz's family started the UW-Eau Claire Foundation scholarship fund, which reached an endowed (permanently funded) level in less than a year with donations from more than 100 donors from at least 12 states. A $500 scholarship will be awarded each year to a student majoring in environmental and public health who also plans to study abroad for a semester. Krenz, an environmental and public health major, had planned to study in Australia during the 2002 spring semester.

Willkom, a 2002 Chippewa Falls High School graduate, is an environmental and public health major and spent the spring 2004 semester on a study-abroad program in France.
