UW-Eau Claire Children's Center
Receives National Accreditation

 MAILED:  July 9, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - The Children's Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire recently was granted accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, a designation the program has held since 1987.

This recognition has been achieved by about only 8,000 early childhood programs nationwide and just four programs in Eau Claire.

"We are pleased to again receive accreditation, which is a thorough, voluntary process where early childhood programs need to demonstrate that they meet national standards of excellence," said Becky Wurzer, director of the UW-Eau Claire Children's Center, adding that the center is committed to ongoing evaluation and improvement.

The Children's Center provides child care for children of UW- Eau Claire students, faculty and staff, as well as for children of community members.

Child care centers, preschools, kindergartens and school-age child care programs are eligible to seek NAEYC accreditation. Approximately 12,000 programs are engaged in seeking accreditation

The Children's Center underwent an intensive self-study, collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators and classroom observations. The accuracy of the self-study was verified during a site visit to the center by a team of trained volunteers. The self-study, including Wurzer's responses to the visit, was reviewed by a commission of recognized experts who granted accreditation. The accreditation will run through 2008.
