U.S. Rep. Ron Kind will be on campus from 9-11 a.m. TODAY, Monday, June 28, to visit with area youngsters participating in the National Youth Sports Program at UW-Eau Claire. Kind will begin his visit in Room 105 of Hilltop Center. He will then go to Simpson Field, where he will throw passes to NYSP campers. NYSP President Gale Wiedow also will be on campus to talk with Kind about the program. NYSP is a federally funded program for boys and girls, ages 10-16, who are primarily from economically deprived families. The program, which takes place on campus, provides area youth with an opportunity to learn sports skills, receive information about drugs/alcohol, nutrition, careers and higher education. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service funds NYSP and the USDA summer food service program provides food. The NYSP Project at UW-Eau Claire is ranked as one of the top programs in the country. The five-week program will continue on campus through July 16. Thirteen UW-Eau Claire students will spend the next five weeks studying at the University of KwaZula-Natal International School in South Africa. The students are participating in the university's first study abroad program in South Africa. Orientation for new freshmen is under way at UW-Eau Claire. New freshmen will participate in one-day orientation sessions all week, June 28-July 2. Additional sessions will continue through July 8.
