UW-Eau Claire Students Perform in D-Day Ceremonies in France

 MAILED:  June 3, 2004

Sixty University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students will be in France this weekend to participate in activities to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

UW-Eau Claire's Concert Choir will perform for World War II veterans in Caen, France, the center of some of the fiercest fighting in the liberation of 1944. The concert will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

Also four members of UW-Eau Claire's Concert Choir were selected to represent the United States in an international ensemble of musicians from World War II allied countries in a special performance at Omaha Beach. The international group will perform Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem" at 10 p.m. Saturday, June 5, on Omaha Beach.

World leaders and World War II veterans will attend the special performance, which will be broadcast live on French television stations. President Bush left for Europe today to participate in weekend D-Day events.

Both concerts, as well as several others, are part of the 2004 American Celebration of Music in France, which offers performance opportunities for American musicians and a way to renew long-standing Franco-American ties.

UW-Eau Claire's Concert Choir members will return to Eau Claire Wednesday, June 9.
