UW-Eau Claire Hires Dr. Donald P. Christian
As Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences

 MAILED:  May 25, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - Dr. Donald P. Christian has been hired as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Christian will assume the dean responsibilities Aug. 1, replacing interim dean Bernard Duyfhuizen, Chancellor Donald Mash announced today. Duyfhuizen will return to his position as associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

"I'm enthusiastic about the leadership Dr. Christian will bring to the College of Arts and Sciences," Mash said. "He has dedicated his career to higher education, and has proven in past positions that he is committed to academic excellence, is a strong promoter of the scholarly activities of the faculty, and has exceptional communication skills. His colleagues speak of him in superlatives."

Christian currently serves as the associate dean for the biological sciences and professor of biological sciences at the University of Montana in Missoula. He has been in his current position since 1997. The University of Montana is a "doctoral intensive" university and the flagship liberal arts university in the state.

"UW-Eau Claire has a long-standing reputation as a high-quality, public university that is committed to excellence," Christian said. "I am anxious to be part of this institution, and to take on the challenges and responsibilities of being the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences."

Prior to moving to Montana, Christian was a biology professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth for 19 years, and served as the head of the biology department for four years. From 1971-1977, he was a graduate student at Michigan State University.

Christian's academic background is in mammalian ecology and physiological ecology, areas in which he has published extensively. He's also maintained a small research program at the University of Montana, involving students in all aspects of his work.

In 2000, the University of Montana awarded Christian with the Outstanding Academic Administrator Award. He also received numerous honors and awards during his years in Minnesota.

"Donald Christian comes to UW-Eau Claire highly recommended by all those we've talked with who have worked with him at other institutions," said Dr. Marty Wood, chair of the Search and Screen Committee for Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "He's an accomplished teacher, researcher and administrator. He is particularly committed to faculty-undergraduate student collaborative research."

"Dr. Christian is well qualified to lead our College of Arts and Sciences to the next level of excellence," said Dr. Steve Tallant, interim provost and vice chancellor.
