UW-Eau Claire English Department Announces
Faculty Awards and Outstanding Senior

 MAILED:  May 19, 2004

EAU CLAIRE - The English Department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has announced the recipients of its three most prestigious faculty awards as well as the Sigma Tau Delta Outstanding Senior Award.

Assistant professor Erica Benson and professor John Hildebrand each received the Elizabeth Morris Library Outreach Award, funded by the estates of emeriti professors John and Elizabeth Morris and their children. This award is available to members of the teaching staff of the UW-Eau Claire department of English, active and emeriti, for presentation of annual discussion series, workshops and/or lectures at the L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library designed to appeal to a broader audience, provide outreach opportunities for the university, and be accessible to the general public.

Assistant professor Carmen Manning received the Duyfhuizen Professorship. This award, funded by Bernard Duyfhuizen, professor of English and interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Patricia Duyfhuizen, is designed to provide support for an active scholar in English studies for a full year. Currently the fund provides $500 in direct support of scholarly activity. The recipient must be a faculty member in English who has shown sustained production and achievement in English studies scholarship.

Lecturer Blake Westerlund received the Sigma Tau Delta "Big Fish" Award, presented by the students of the Theta Zeta chapter of Sigma Tau Delta to a teaching faculty or academic staff member in the English department to recognize outstanding contributions to the students' learning experience. The "Big Fish" Award goes to a teacher who has served as a model for English majors and minors and has been involved with students as an outstanding teacher, adviser, mentor and scholar.

Traci Thomas, Eau Claire, was named the Outstanding Sigma Tau Delta Senior, given to a graduating senior who has displayed outstanding scholarship and active involvement in Sigma Tau Delta. According to English department faculty members, who choose the recipient of this award, Traci Thomas has distinguished herself in both leadership and scholarship. In the past year, Traci served as president of the local chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, was a major organizer of this year's English Festival, was selected to read her poems at the Sigma Tau Delta national convention in March, and has been elected to serve as associate student representative for the Midwest, a position she can hold while pursuing her graduate degree at UW-Eau Claire.
