EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I will perform a spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Under the direction of Robert Baca, director of jazz studies, the ensemble will perform a program featuring a variety of student or faculty solos and compositions by jazz greats and UW-Eau Claire alumni.
The program will open with Gordon Goodwin’s “Hunting Wabbits,” and continue with “Round Midnight” by Thelonius Monk and “Lock Box” by Jamey Simmons. The first half of the program also will include compositions by Sergei Prokoviev, Victor Young and Duke Ellington.
The second half of the program will open with a Sammy Nestico arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherezade” and will continue with “To Start Again” by UW-Eau Claire alumnus Jamey Simmons and “Tenderly,” as arranged by another recent graduate, Andrew Neesley. The closing number will be alumnus Kyle Newmaster’s “Horizons.” The UW-Eau Claire Studio Orchestra also will be featured on “To Start Again” and “Horizons.”
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, (715) 836-3727 or (800) 949-UWEC, are $4.75 for the general public; $3.75 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.25 for students with a university ID.
