Recreation Story/Photo Opportunities

Outdoor Recreation at UW-Eau Claire will offer several
events next week that might provide opportunities for interesting stories or
photos relating to students and the outdoors.
- Outdoor Cooking and Skills Connecting
Youth with the Land, 5 p.m., April 19, Outdoor Recreation Center in the basement
of Hilltop on upper campus. Students will learn new techniques for
backcountry cooking. A Student Conservation Association volunteer also will
give a short presentation about how the nation’s oldest and largest
provider of conservation service opportunities is building a new generation
of conservation leaders.
- Chippewa River Bank Clean Up, 4 p.m., April 20,
meet at Fine Arts parking lot on lower campus.
Campus volunteers will join volunteers from the Water Street Business Association
to clean up the banks of the Chippewa River.
- A Paddle Through Chippewa River
History, 1 p.m., April 23, meet behind Hilltop on upper campus. Twelve
students will join Outdoor Recreation Center assistant director Dan Langlois
and geography professor Scott Harnett on a canoe trip through a stretch of
the lower Chippewa River that is rich in natural history, eagle populations
and historic sites. The trip begins at the Meridean boat landing where the
river channel braids around Chippewa Island, ending at the Hubbard landing
at Nine Mile Island.
- Spring Tree Planting Trip, 8
a.m., April 24, meet behind Hilltop on upper campus. The group will
travel to area locations to plant trees, which will help replenish water tables,
conserve and stabilize soil, reduce flooding and enhance wildlife habitat.
- The Benefits of a Controlled
Burn, 8 a.m., April 24, meet behind Hilltop on upper campus. Student
volunteers will assist a Pheasants Forever habitat specialist at a controlled
burn site. For 20 years, Pheasants Forever has been a leader in enhancing,
restoring and creating upland wildlife habitat. The trip into the outdoors
will give students opportunities for a hands-on experience at a controlled
burn site.
